yEd Graph Editor has an attractive interface, with a tabbed work area that lets you have multiple files open at once. Several aspects of the interface are modular, allowing you to close them when not needed. An overview module shows a broad overview of the graph, while the neighborhood view shows details of a selected area, and structure view shows graph items in a tree hierarchy. The palette allows you to choose from a wide variety of shapes and connecting lines, and there are objects including people, computer networking hardware, UML objects, and more. Charts can be saved in a variety of image formats, as well as PDF and HTML files. We found it easy to get started with yEd Graph Editor, but referring to the built-in Help file provided us with plenty of thorough instructions for making the most of the program. We think that yEd Graph Editor is a great choice for anyone needing to create a graphic representation of information, be it a family tree, decision tree, flow chart, organizational chart, user instructions, or any number of other possibilities.

It is not only useful and effective but also easy and intuitive to handle. The entry fields remind of the Windows “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties” but it´s much easier to fill in the adresses. NetSetMan network settings manager which can switch between visually structured profiles. With only 2 mouse clicks you can activate a saved profile!

All settings and changes are saved automatically in a separate file (settings.ini) so a backup, transfer or upgrade to another version is absolutely no problem.

Hardware Asset Tracker has a tabbed interface that categorizes hardware as Computers, Laptops, Modems, Monitors, NICs, Printers, and Workstations. If you don’t like those categories or want to add others, too bad; there’s no way to customize them. For each item of hardware, you can record information such as the supplier, location, serial number, value, condition, price, installation date, and more; these fields can be customized as desired. Images can be added for each item as well. We liked that Hardware Asset Tracker offers a variety of reports that can be sorted by field, as well as the capability to print labels with item information. There’s no way to search for specific items, but a series of letters across the bottom of the interface lets you quickly jump to all items that start with a particular letter. A built-in Help file provides thorough instructions for the program’s use. Overall, we didn’t find Hardware Asset Tracker to be particularly attractive or sophisticated, but it will do an adequate job of cataloging your hardware.

Checker Plus downloads and installs like other Chrome add-ons, which is to say quickly and painlessly. The add-on’s extensive options include desktop notification settings, background mode, tooltips, time format, highlighting, and a check box to always use SSL; and that’s just for starters.

In fact, we can’t recall seeing many Chrome extensions with as many options as Checker Plus, let alone options that are actually useful, but you can easily contact developer Jason Savard and request any you can think of. Savard also maintains an extensive wiki-based Help file, including videos and logs.

We tested the desktop notification, which includes both sound alerts and a voice notification that reads the title of your event out loud. Clicking Snooze recycles pop-up messages at intervals ranging from 5 minutes to 4 hours or up to a week. Checker Plus really comes into its own in Google Calendar, though one of its chief advantages is that you don’t have to open Calendar’s Web page to use it: Checker Plus can display information like the time until your next meeting right on its icon on the Chrome toolbar. You can also view and make changes to your Calendar entries in a pop-up that has a Quick Add feature for setting reminders for events that are just about to happen or those that are days away. Checker Plus also supports multiple instances of Google Calendar and Google Apps Calendar.

Checker Plus brings advanced capabilities to a feature that was already useful in many ways.

PerfectDisk’s Office-style ribbon has all the controls you need for scanning disks and running or scheduling defragmentation jobs. The program’s upper half displayed all our drives by name, letter, type, and other headings, correctly identifying our “C” drive as an SSD. But we started with the basics by analyzing and defragmenting our “D” drive, a hard-disk drive (HDD) that is typical of the majority of installed drives. PerfectDisk reported a lot of information about our disk, data, and files, and recommended defragmenting the drive. Slow defragging is a major cause of disk neglect, but PerfectDisk has one of the fastest defragmentation engines we’ve tried. Of course, it also has a defrag map. Next we read up on PerfectDisk’s SSD Optimize feature. Mollified, we ran the scan. But our SSD already ran at peak performance, and PerfectDisk recommended taking no action. We were relieved, since we weren’t crazy about “optimizing” any SSD (as opposed to tweaking Windows for SSDs). But PerfectDisk’s SSD Optimize feature may be just the thing for getting the most out of older, smaller-capacity SSDs that have been heavily used but still have life in them, especially if they cost way too much when new to retire while they can still serve.

The HTML-based Help manual reflects this program’s enterprise-level origins, though some advanced features aren’t included (or needed) in this fully functional freeware, such as remote control and Group Policy Support. PerfectDisk Free Defrag puts a fast defragmentation engine and cutting-edge features in the home user’s hands.
